Unlocking the Power of Photoshop’s “Undo Sliders”
Photoshop, a powerhouse in the world of photo editing and manipulation, provides a myriad of tools to help users perfect their images. Yet, one of the most common actions while working in Photoshop—undoubtedly—is the use of the ‘Undo’ feature. But what if I told you there’s a more nuanced and controlled way to undo changes? Enter Photoshop’s hidden gem: the “Undo Sliders.”
The Magic of the Fade Command
One intriguing way to precisely manage your edits is using the Fade command. This tool allows you to tweak the opacity of your most recent action, providing a slider to blend your edits seamlessly by reducing their intensity. Whether you’re using tools like the Patch Tool or the Healing Brush, by pressing ‘Shift-Command-F’ (or ‘Shift-Control-F’ on Windows), you can adjust the power of your last strokes, ensuring your subject maintains a natural look without over-editing.
This feature particularly shines when handling sensitive corrections like skin blemishes or unwanted wrinkles. By adjusting the slider, you can achieve that perfect balance that respects the subject’s natural beauty while subtly enhancing the photograph.
The Versatility of Layer and Smart Filter Opacity
When you’ve applied an effect or adjustment layer that feels too intense, tweaking the layer’s opacity can act as an “undo slider.” For quick adjustments, direct shortcuts allow you to manipulate these settings without navigating through menus. The simple action of dragging the opacity slider back can immensely change the outcome, reducing effects like overpowering color grading or heavy overlays.
Take the scenario where you’ve applied an overlay using Envato Elements. If the effect is too strong, simply adjust the layer opacity to fine-tune how it blends with the base image.
Smart Filters offer another layer of control. After converting a layer into a Smart Object and applying a filter (perhaps one sourced from graphicriver for an artistic flair), you might find the effect too drastic. Photoshop’s Smart Filters allow you to modify the opacity directly in the blending options, ensuring that the artistic effects enhance rather than overpower the image.
Enhancing Precision with Mask Density and Reconstruct in Liquify
Mask Density acts similarly to the opacity for masks. When using features like bokeh overlays from Dealjumbo, reducing the mask density can help maintain focus on your primary subject without losing the beautiful background effect.
Photoshop’s Liquify tool is powerful for reshaping elements in an image, but it’s easy to go too far. The reconstruct feature within Liquify paired with converting your adjustments into a Smart Object beforehand gives you an undo slider that can alter the changes back and forth until you find the perfect middle ground.
Third-Party Tools to Enhance Your Workflow
For those looking to step up their photo editing game, tools like Luminar Neo and Placeit can be integrated into your workflow, providing additional overlays, filters, and templates that are adjustable and can enhance your creative output. These tools complement Photoshop’s built-in features, offering more flexibility and options in creating compelling visuals.
Combining these advanced undo techniques within Photoshop allows you to refine your edits with higher precision and creativity. The power of undo on a slider not only gives you more control over the editing process but also encourages exploring new possibilities without the fear of making irreversible changes.

@ZoranImsiragic
Fade is a destructive method. If you choose to change some of these strokes, you can't. Rest is very useful and nicely presented. 😊

One thing I want to mention is that there is a weird bug with mask density, in which the mask will be "destroyed" and no amount of undo-ing will get the mask back. It doesn't happen immediately after using the mask density slider; I cannot pinpoint exactly when it happens but when it does, my only remedy is to delete the mask and redo it. It doesn't occur all the time but it occurs frequently enough that I don't want to use it.
@20EUR20
💚 I never used the patch tool!

I know all these tips but just how concise and clear you present them plus your consistency of doing so in every single video you produce is amazing. Been a subscriber for a long time and this is one of only a very few amount of channels that puts out this level of content.
